According to my 12-year-old, he is the only one left who doesn't have a Facebook account. Whether that's in his class, grade or the whole world, I'm not sure, but he insists it's unjust.
Where we live, it's up to us as parents to decide when to let our kids join social media, which is why I was surprised to recently see Jennifer Garner say her kids' school has a policy.
The mother of 10-year-old Violet, 7-year-old Seraphina and 4-year-old Samuel explained to People, "We just had back to school night, and I said afterwards, ?Do they need a computer"? Our daughter doesn?t have any of those things, and she?s the only kid in the class who doesn?t, apparently, so I found an old laptop this weekend for her.? The actress added, "I am kind of panicked about it. She?s not on social media yet ? her school has a no social media policy until 6th grade ? but I know it?s coming soon."
Jennifer Garner went on to say she tries to parent by example, saying, "I try to be the best version of myself and to have faith that they?re watching me as carefully when I do something right as they do when I roll through a stop sign."
If I were to go by that bit of advice, I could currently feel pretty good. On a whim I quit Facebook this past spring and haven't missed much since. In that sense, I'd like to think I'm leading by example -- showing my kids life is just fine without social media.
