Sometimes my 2-year-old is a better mommy than me
by Kelly Wilbanks posted in Parenting
All throughout my pregnancy I worried about my 2-year-old feeling displaced by her baby sister. They are only 20 months apart and I feared Evie would fight to still be the baby. But I've found that the one who's been displaced is me. Evie is such a sweet and caring older sister that she constantly reminds me how to be a better mom.
The first words on her lips every morning are, "Hi Annie! Hi Annie! Hi Annie!" as she races out of bed into our room to welcome her baby sister to a new day. She wriggles onto our bed, kisses her and say's "Hi Annie!" on repeat. There has been no "sleeping in" since the day Annie was born, mainly because her big sister is so excited to see her as soon as she wakes up.
My husband and I disagree about this photo. He thinks Evie looks like she's going to cut you if you touch her baby sister. I know she was soothing her sister in a way that touches my heart. We'd had thunderstorms a few days before and it scared Evie pretty badly. To comfort her I held her and told her she was safe. To comfort Annie, who had just started crying, she was whispering to her that she was safe. Heart. Melted.
I thought binkies were going to be our biggest battle with Evie snatching all of them, but she KNOWS which ones are hers and which ones aren't. In fact, when we brought Annie home from the hospital one of the first things Evie did to welcome her was find the binky Annie got for Christmas...
