When Zooey Deschanel's daughter Elsie Otter turned 1-year-old earlier this month, the New Girl actress thought she'd hop aboard a healthy trend and serve her up a sugar-free smash cake.
Unfortunately, that didn't over so well with the birthday girl.
Zooey, 36, recounted the cake catastrophe during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
?I made her a little heart-shaped cake that didn?t have sugar ? I put just mashed banana in it. She?s so little, there?s a lot of sugar in cake. And I whipped up some coconut cream and I put it on top," she explained. ?And I kept seeing on the internet, ?You've gotta make a smash cake for your 1-year-old.'... So we?re like, ?All right, here?s your cake! Happy birthday!?" Little Elsie dipped a finger into the cake, tasted it and then made a face that showed exactly what she thought of it.
?Not at all interested. No smashing," Zooey laments. ?I should?ve given her a cheesecake.?

Can't you just picture it" I'm with Elsie on this one - bring on that cheesecake!
I do try to regulate the amount of sugar my kids get, but when it comes to birthdays all bets are off. Even when they turned one year old, they got a frosting-laden sugar bomb to celebrate the occasion.
Dessert disasters aside, Zooey says that she and her husband Jacob Pechenik have loved the first year of being parents to little Elsie: ?She?s the best, she?s so much fun.?
