The dumb joke I make to deflect potential judgment about being pregnant again
by Melissa Willets posted in Pregnancy
When I got pregnant for the fourth time, I immediately felt the need to protect our news, because I was already imagining all the judgmental comments I might hear from friends, family and acquaintances.
"Again""
"You know how that happens, right""
"You guys just can't stop!"
"Going for that boy"" (I am a mom of 3 girls)
Since sharing our baby joy, I have indeed "enjoyed" these comments and more, but I recently found a way to beat people to the punch. Before they can even utter something like, "Another one"" I say, "It's the last time, I swear!"
I literally find myself greeting people who haven't seen me in awhile with this one-liner instead of "Hello." In the school parking lot, I'm all, "It's the last time, I swear!" when I run into a mom I used to chat with at swimming lessons.
I see a neighbor, who'd been holed up for the winter, at a local restaurant this past weekend. "It's the last time, I swear!" I call out at her, before she can ask about my very-noticeable baby bump.
"It's the last time, I swear!" I'm going to go ahead and trademark this joke, I use it so much.
Dun-dun-chhh...
So hilarious, right" Or not.
In fact lately, I've been asking myself why I feel a need to proactively defend our decision to get pregnant again. Maybe it's because most of my friends stopped at two or three. Perh...
