The single most important thing I do as a single dad

As a single dad, I've found that I share a lot of the same struggles as my single-mom friends. Operating on a shoestring budget and being the only one to manage the money is universal to single parenthood. So is the fatigue from the seemingly never-ending list of things to do, and the need for extended network of friends and loved ones to call on for help.
But there are also a few differences in our experience. The struggles we face all stem from the same systemic problems. The reason I never have a changing table to work with in the men?s room is the same reason women face a stigma as single mothers: our society has a stubborn, deeply ingrained concept of gender roles and expectations that affect our collective subconscious. Altering society?s gender biases will take a bit of time and possibly a few more generations. But there are things I've learned I can do to help my own situation as a single dad and be a positive presence in my children?s lives.
The single most important thing a single dad can do is take care of his own mental health.
When it comes to taking care of your mental health, it?s crucial to look at the choices we make. Sometimes, it?s necessary to take a step back and ask yourself if you?re doing the right thing for you, rather than the easiest thing.
