?Dear secondborn, I will tell you the truth; The truth about the hand-me-downs, the caffeine and soft cheese during pregnancy, my lack of a birth plan, and weekly bump photos; The fact that I didn?t wait with bated breath for every single milestone.
The difficult truths, like the fact that you had to cry more, wait more, share more. The fact that I, your mama, was often not the best version of myself.?
A beautiful poem written by mother-of-two Rasha Rushdy has been making its rounds online and has moms of more-than-one in tears.
As a mother of a secondborn child, and as a secondborn myself, I am so moved by Rushdy?s piece.
She perfectly tackles the hard truths of expecting a second child. While pregnant with my second son I remember thinking, Will I be able to love another baby as much as my first" Why is it so much easier bending pregnancy rules the second time around" Am I a good enough mom to successfully love and nurture two children at once" And, the answer to that last question is a resounding YES.
It?s funny now, looking back at all the fears I had upon the arrival of my secondborn. Because, I never felt any of the things we moms worry our child will feel when they are second in line.
I didn?t notice that all the toys and baby gear were previously loved. I never felt my mom didn?t have enough of herself for me. And, surprisingly, I loved the hand-me-downs (well, until middle school anyway).
