Women in their 50s and even 40s are often stigmatized for having children at an "advanced maternal age."
But one Indian woman has taken this term to a whole new level.
After two years of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment -- including two prior failed attempts --Â a 70-year-old woman from India has given birth to her first child. New mother Daljinder Kaur delivered a healthy baby boy in April.
She and her 79-year-old husband have been married for 46 years. They have struggled over these years in a culture that sometimes views infertility as a curse from God. ?I feel blessed to be able to hold my own baby. I had lost hope of becoming a mother ever,? Kaur told Agence France Presse (AFP.) ?I used to feel empty. There was so much loneliness.? While the new parents are obviously over the moon for their bouncing baby boy, not everyone is supportive of elderly couples going through IVF. ?There are ethical issues," fertility expert Sunil Jindal told AFP. "In my opinion it is unfair to do such a procedure on a woman who is over 60 ... Then the question comes how are the parents going to look after the baby" That is also quite a task.?
