Toddler's death after choking on grapes serves as a tragic reminder

A family is grieving the death of their toddler son after he choked on grapes while with his mother at the grocery store.
Emma Carver was shopping with her 2-year-old son, Ayyan, last week when, unbeknownst to her, he helped himself to grapes inside the cart. The Detroit mom heard Ayyan making choking sounds and rushed to help him. ?I even threw the cheese down and I started banging on him,? Carver told WXYZ News. ?But it wasn't getting it out, so it had to be lodged.?
In the meantime, another shopper called 911 and someone else stepped in to try CPR. An ambulance arrived between 5 and 7 minutes later. Although rescuers were able to dislodge one grape, the toddler was already gone. A second grape was removed at the hospital. The devastated parents said they've signed up for first aid classes; they encourage others to do the same.
I'm well-aware that young children can choke on basically anything, but grapes and hot dogs make me particularly paranoid. I slice both of these foods into fourths, at the very least. Confession: I tend to just bite grapes into tiny pieces before handing the bits over to my toddler. It's probably disgusting to watch -- because it's basically like a mama bird feeding her baby -- but I have no shame.
Still, that's not even the issue, here. Not really. This poor mom didn't even know her toddler had gotten into the grapes. So yes, this story serves as a reminder to be extra careful when knowingly serving food...
