Toys "R" Us is closing its doors, & babies -- or a lack thereof -- are partially to blame

In case you haven't heard the news yet, Toys "R" Us recently confirmed that it would be closing all of its locations in the U.S. ? including Babies "R" Us stores.
Yup. And there goes my childhood Down the drain.

In its most recent annual report, the toy giant gave a number of reasons for its demise, including its crippling debt, competition from Amazon and Walmart, a shift in what kids are playing with (think technology/smartphones,) and labor costs, The Washington Post reported. Another culprit" Babies ? or a lack thereof ? in recent years. "The decrease of birthrates in countries where we operate could negatively affect our business. Most of our end-customers are newborns and children and, as a result, our revenue are dependent on the birthrates in countries where we operate. In recent years, many countries? birthrates have dropped or stagnated as their population ages, and education and income levels increase. A continued and significant decline in the number of newborns and children in these countries could have a material adverse effect on our operating results."
For the record, the declining birthrate over the past 12 years does seem to coincide with the company's declining annual revenue over the same period, The Washington Post pointed out. (Al...
