Watch: April the giraffe labors, undetectably, on live stream
by Michelle Stein posted in Pregnancy
A New York zoo is currently live streaming a laboring giraffe, April, who is due to give birth any time now. Millions of viewers from around the world, it seems, are captivated by the imminent miracle of life.
Unfortunately, Animal Adventure Park's live stream was interrupted at around 8 a.m. yesterday. YouTube pulled the video for, get this, "nudity & sexual content." (What"! It's a giraffe. They're kind of always naked, aren't they") "Animal Rights Extremists" were responsible for the blackout, according to a Facebook post by the zoo. The feed has been restored since 9:45 a.m. yesterday, and there's still no sign of a baby giraffe making its way into the world yet.
If you wish to participate in the great giraffe crotch watch, tune in to the live feed below. This will be the 15-year-old giraffe's fourth calf and her partner, Oliver's, first.
Fun fact: Giraffes are pregnant for 15 months. (That kind of makes 10 months seem not so bad, doesn't it") As with humans, labor can last anywhere between a few hours to a few days. Something else that might make you feel better about childbirth: A newborn calf weighs roughly 150 pounds and will be 6 feet tall. Plus, it'll be up and walking only an hour after its grand entrance. That is one massive baby.
In other news, the zoo plans on holding a naming contest for April's newest arrival. I'm partial to Twiggy. Any suggestions"
