This is what's in my daughter's lunch box today: Half of a ham and cheese sandwich, a box of raisins, a handful of Goldfish crackers and a granola bar.
This is what is likely in globetrotting chef Anthony Bourdain's daughter's lunch box: chicken katsu and Spam musabi.
If you don't know what that last one is, don't worry - neither did I. I Googled it, though, and Spam musabi is a Hawaiian snack that is basically grilled Spam stuck on a block of rice with dried seaweed wrapped around it. Think cooked Spam sushi, as unlikely as that sounds.
The 60-year-old foodie admits he goes to extremes when it comes time to pack the dreaded school lunch. There's no bologna for his 9-year-old daughter Ariane - or if there is, it's probably been flambéed or transformed into some kind of mousse. "I'm like the chef in 'Eat Drink Man Woman,' where she's an object of curiosity at school because we play a game where I try not to repeat myself," he explains. "She goes to an Italian school, and they don't see a lot of Spam musubi. I do some elaborate, kooky stuff. I actually take a perverse pleasure in sending my daughter to school with stuff that I know she loves, but that those other kids' moms are definitely not making."
