What really went down when professor's kids crashed his live TV interview

Ever since I watched that hilarious, viral clip of a professor's kids crashing his live BBC interview, I've been dying to know the backstory.
Well, here we have it, folks: Dad forgot to lock his home office door. That's it. One innocent parenting mistake is what led to this priceless moment. Because, of course it did.
In the family's first interview since their unexpected viral fame, Kelly and his wife Jung-a Kim shared their reactions to the humorous series of events. Their two adorable children, Marion and James, made an encore appearance as well. (Except this time, it was scheduled.)
"Well, there was a mixture of some surprise and embarrassment and amusement. And love and affection," Kelly told The Wall Street Journal. "And they were terribly cute. I saw the video just like everybody else did. It was really funny." Because of the overwhelming amount of attention and solicitation, Kelly said they have tried to steer clear of social media and have shut off phone notifications. Still, they appreciate the humor of the video and understand why people find it so delightful.
The couple also cleared up a few more details surrounding the infamous interruption:
