When did Easter become Christmas in the springtime"
by Sara McGinnis posted in Parenting
When I was growing up we always got the same thing in our Easter baskets: a reasonably-sized (and hollow) chocolate bunny and cheap jelly beans sprinkled into green plastic grass. That was it. No Halloween-sized amount of candy, no Christmas-style toys or gifts, and no additional baskets from my grandparents.
It's been a little different for my kids, and it started so slowly I almost didn't notice it.
My husband and I would make our boys baskets with a little more candy than I got growing up (who can say no to Cadbury mini eggs"). Then my parents would drop by with a second round of chocolate bunnies and some coloring books. Then my in-laws would show up with Peeps, Reese's eggs, bubbles, and a Nerf football or Frisbee. Any one part on its own wasn't excessive, but gathered together it turns into quite a haul! I'm not the only one noticing Easter is escalating towards Christmas-level gifting. Members of the BabyCenter Community are discussing gifting Hatchimals (which I do have to concede "hatch" quite appropriately from eggs), Legos, pajamas, new outfits, movies, books, and more.
Don't get me wrong. I'm on board with toys substituting in for sugary treats, but I also detest "stuff" that is purchased just for the sake of buying something. I'm looking at you, dollar-bin jump ropes and cheap squirt guns that never work. The kinds of things my kids will never play with and yet also staunchly refuse to get rid of...
