When you tell me to ?enjoy this time? I secretly want to punch you in the face
by Becky Vieira posted in Parenting
I was recalling a particularly rough day of motherhood. My son bit me, threw up in my hair, refused to nap and then yanked out a lock of my hair as I was feeding him dinner. It was a brutal 24 hours I wouldn?t want to relive.
I was hoping for a response along the lines of, ?I?ve been there,? ?it will get better,? or ?let me give you a hug and buy you your favorite beverage.?
But instead what I heard was, ?enjoy this time because it won?t last forever.?
I tried to smile, I think maybe I gave a nod of acknowledgement. But in my mind I was screaming, ?please just shut up and let me vent!? Why do people feel the need to tell moms to ?enjoy this time"? Do they honestly think we don?t enjoy our children" Or that we have to enjoy them at all times, even the miserable moments that not even a mother could love"
Here?s a newsflash that may blow your mind: participating in the occasional bitch session does not diminish our abilities as a mother.
