Before the LATCH Restraint System became a requirement on car seats and in vehicles in 2002, every car seat was installed with a seat belt. It worked ? but it can be a giant pain to get a seat belt tight. Even with your elbow jammed into the seat and both hands working, getting all the slack out of the belt can be a difficult chore, all but impossible for those without hand/arm strength or who can?t bend over (c-section moms of the world, my heart goes out to you).
LATCH was introduced to make installs easier. It?s newer than seat belts, so parents often ask: Is LATCH safer than seat belts"
Both seat belt and LATCH installs are safe and crash-tested. The best install is the one that works best for your seat, your car, and your child. That being said, installing your car seat with seat belts instead of LATCH has a couple of significant upsides:
1) There?s no weight limit on seatbelts. You must stop using your car?s LATCH system once the combined weight of your child and the car seat is 65 pounds. Since many car seats, particularly convertible seats, weigh 25 pounds or more, that means your child will probably outgrow the LATCH limits before he or she outgrows the seat. On the other hand, seat belts are made to hold thousands of pounds. Your child won?t be outgrowing that.
2) You can install in the center using a seat belt. The safest place in most cars is the center of the back seat. But frustratingly, most cars only have LA...
