Why are family bathrooms in the United States so behind"

My kids, thankfully, are now old enough to allow me to go to the bathroom alone. (It was a milestone). I vividly remember when this was not the case. I recall, with a shudder, trying to shop with kids. And specifically, trying to use the bathroom myself with kids in tow.
In my memory, using a public restroom was a germy source of stress. It's on the short list of the stuff I unequivocally do not miss about small children.
Who among us has not fiddled with changing tables missing straps when dealing with a diaper blowout" This is most assuredly annoying. But as it turns out, meeting the bathroom needs of babies in a public setting is far easier than meeting our needs as parents.
Family bathrooms in the United States are scarce. And when you can find one the most frequent perk is that the door shuts all the way and you can sort of park a kid on the floor for just a second if it is absolutely necessary. Before you begin frantically trying to disinfect because what did they just touch" What is the deal with family bathrooms in the United States" Why are they so sub-par"
Other places do family bathrooms better. The photo here is a public bathroom (individual stall!) in Japan. There is a safe place to put your baby while you use the bathroom. Genius. I am told that these exist in the United States but in fifteen years of parenting I've never seen one.
