Why baby-led weaning is the smartest thing ever
by Deidra Romero posted in Parenting
I?m a big proponent of parenting smarter, not harder. I think we can still be intentional, hands-on parents without over-complicating this whole motherhood deal.
All that said, I had no clue what I was doing with my first child. I thought doing more and making a fuss over everything made me a good mom. So I was excited to introduce solids and start a new phase of my son's development.
Won?t he be cute in his little bib! It will be so fun to eat dinners together. Hopefully, this will take some of the pressure off breastfeeding.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
Talk about a first-time mom moment.
With my second baby, I was actually dreading starting solids. Not only are you doing your breastfeeding sessions every day, you are also adding food in three times a day. If you're like me, and you do six feedings in a 24-hour cycle, that means you're taking the time to do nine feeding sessions a day with your baby. WHAT THE HECK. Plus all that spoon-feeding takes forever and I felt like I never got to enjoy my own meals. When I was preparing to introduce solids to my daughter, I heard a friend mention baby-led weaning. I had never actually heard of it before, so she explained it to me with a few simple guidelines.
No baby food.
Okay. Right out of the gate, this is the point that won me over. No slaving over organic baby food. Not feeling guilty for feeding my baby store-bought food. No more packing pouches of baby food and stockpiling from Costco runs.
