Why I'm finding out my baby's gender, then not telling anybody
by Melissa Willets posted in Pregnancy
Everyone on the planet, or so it seems, is wondering if I'm having a boy or a girl. Because everywhere I go, people ask me the same question: "Do you know what you're having"!"!"
I don't, yet, for the record. But next week I will. Except I'm not planning on telling anyone what the gender of our baby is, so I apologize in advance.
For a while, I wasn't sure we would find out the gender of our fourth baby. My husband and I always said that if we were lucky enough to conceive again (it took a while!), we would wait until the birth to find out if our baby was a boy or a girl.
The problem is, I have three very excited little girls who can't wait that long. Which is fine; I'm more than happy to learn the gender of our baby at my upcoming 20-week ultrasound. We can start planning, and the kids will be involved, and all will be well; no, awesome! The thing is, I really don't want to share our news with, um, anyone. And I'm not exactly sure why I feel an instinct to protect the information, but I do.
I've written previously about feeling afraid to have a boy after three girls. Maybe that's part of my reluctance to share the big news. If we find out we are expecting a boy, an idea I have come around to in recent weeks, I will still need time to adjust to that "shock," on my own, without outside influence.
If it's a girl, I know we'll be thrilled.
