Work, sleep, family, fitness, friends: You can only choose 3
by Maggie Downs posted in Life
I was trying to prioritize my health and fitness, but I could feel my work slipping. So I shifted a few things in my day to bring work to the forefront. And that?s when I realized I wasn?t spending much time with my son anymore.
I?ve been obsessed with finding a work-life-family balance ever since I gave birth (maybe even before I gave birth). It seemed like it came so easy to everyone else, like I was the only one who couldn?t figure it out, like storm clouds were following me around.
Pick three. Three! No wonder I'm failing at everything. I'm trying to do, like, nine things all at once. And I spend a lot of time on eating too.
?Want to see your kids, keep fit, and keep your business going" Forget sleep, according to this formula. And you won't be spending much time with your friends, either,? says this Inc.com post about the tweet. It?s an oversimplification, of course. There's a constant -- daily -- process of prioritization. There are times when my work is enormous enough to take up two slots, and that complicates all the other areas. Then there are times when my body demands more sleep and attention.
Inevitably, just when everything seems under control, some clowns crash the circus. In those moments, as ringmaster, I struggle to keep everything going.
The thing I like about the "pick three" idea, though, is that it gives me three areas to turn my focus to instead of trying to be everything to everybody all the time...
