How do you choose the A-level subjects that will determine what you study at university ? when you have yet to take your GCSEs" Lorne Stefanini, Assistant Head Academic at Felsted School, Essex, has some sage advice
It feels like a big decision, because it is a big decision; narrowing your studies from a range of subjects down to just three or four that may shape future career choices seems a daunting task.
The first stage comes in the October, which is when we talk to pupils about preparations for mock GCSE exams. A vital role for parents is to revisit reports and look at areas identified by teachers for development.
This can also be an important start to the conversation about future choices ? what are your child?s strengths" Where are their weaknesses" Are these related to the subject, or is a peer or teacher-pupil relationship affecting this" Most pupils are already able to say which subjects they don?t want to take, but it is always worth unpacking this before discounting subjects too soon. Around this time, we hold a subject fair that pupils attend with parents. This allows them to engage in discussions with teachers about what is involved in subjects at A-level (or the International Baccalaureate Diploma). Importantly, there is always a chance to talk with existing A-level pupils to get a deeper understanding of what they like about the subject, and which areas are challenging.
