A short history
Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland was founded in 1934 by German educationalist Dr Kurt Hahn who was born to Jewish parents in Berlin in 1886. Hahn spoke out against the rise of the Nazi Party in the early 1930s and was arrested. After being released it was no longer safe for him to stay in Germany and so he fled to Moray in Scotland where he bought the Gordonstoun estate which has a history that dates back to the 13th century.
Although the school was initially a school for boys, that all changed in 1972 when it was one of the first independent schools to become fully co-educational. Today it has more than 550 pupils in its junior and senior schools. What is Gordonstoun school known for"
Its broad curriculum and character education. Kurt Hahn?s aim was to create well-rounded citizens with an added focus on outdoor education, life skills and service that he regarded as just as important as academic achievement. The school also inspired The Duke of Edinburgh?s Award and was the first school to educate an heir to the British throne.
