Thanks to the Extinction Rebellion protests and 16-year-old climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg and her impassioned pleas for governments around the world to tackle the dire consequences of climate change, Generation Z has been seriously galvanised into demanding action from our politicians before it?s too late.
It goes without saying that an independent school often has the environment and its welfare firmly embedded within its ethos. They try to instil in pupils a global outlook and a sense of responsibility for the world around them, from reducing single-use plastic to tackling the fast-fashion issue, recycling and brainstorming green initiatives that will make a difference to schools, their communities and the environment for years to come. Environmental education goes hand-in-hand with pupil wellbeing at Putney High GDST, where the Breathe programme is showing the impact that even small changes can make to the everyday learning environment. Launched by MP Justine Greening in 2018, Breathe has already demonstrated a reduction in pollution levels and waste at the school, through a ban on single-use plastic, recycling more efficiently and cutting unnecessary use of electricity.
