Tutors are a common feature at most senior schools, although their role may differ. At Bryanston, the tutor is central to our one-to-one approach to teaching and learning.
One-to-one Tutor
Each tutor has individual tutorial pupils with whom they meet, one-to-one, at least once a week. The allocation of tutorial pupils is governed neither by house nor year, but by a careful selection process based on shared areas of interest and individual needs. Crucially, the tutor remains with their tutorial pupils throughout their school career, ensuring a deep understanding and trust.
Pupils also see their subject teachers individually, in addition to timetabled classes, for ?correction periods?. Used extensively in the sixth form, these periods give pupils the chance to test their grasp of a subject and can help them go from a sense of uncertainty about a topic to one of insight and authority. This approach encourages pupils to be articulate about what they are learning, and to engage with adults in an increasingly mature way. The sense of mutual respect between staff and pupils is at the heart of all we do.
Pupils at Bryanston have slightly fewer lessons than those at other schools to ensure there is dedicated time for correction periods, and also for ?assignment periods?. With guidance from the tutor, these private study periods allow pupils to develop the skills needed...
