Loretto School near Edinburgh prides itself as a top golf school, keeping the Scottish golfing heritage alive since it was invented in Scotland in the 15th century. With the US Open Golf Championships 2022 beginning this week, we take a look behind the scenes at Loretto’s famous Golf Academy.
A clear-cut niche Loretto School, just outside Edinburgh, is something of a pioneer when it comes to differentiation. Its golf academy, the first of its kind, has cut a clear niche. Golf is as integral to Scotland today as it was back in the 15th century when the game of ?gowf?, as it was known in those days, was banned by Parliament under King James II as a distraction from military training. Fortunately, the ban was lifted when the Treaty of Glasgow came into effect in 1502 and the game has gone from strength to strength ever since, with Scotland being the birthplace of modern golf. Loretto School has a strong tradition of top-level golf, dating back to its founding in 1827. The school has a long and distinguished history in educational excellence in the UK and is Scotland?s oldest surviving boarding school.
