Behind the Scenes: Farleigh School
Grouchy Gruffalos, wicked witches and pesky pirates" There’s never a dull moment on Farleigh School’s theme days, says Jenifer Hillman
It is undeniable that children soak up more knowledge when they are enthused and excited by what they are learning. And at Farleigh Pre-Prep, our ?signature dishes? include theme days, in which a different theme is explored during each term.
Some of our theme days consolidate work that we have already covered in the classroom. Year One?s Winnie the Witch Day, for example, has the children dressing up, visiting a witch?s cavern in the woods, casting spells and reading stories about witches. Back in the safety of their classroom, they make their own potions and write down the recipes.
The school?s annual Castles Day, on the other hand, which is hosted by History Off the Page, gives the children the chance to experience medieval shopping and trades. Visits to the apothecary for love potions and healing ointments have been popular with the pupils and, as all this went on, we indulged in a lot of gossip about the wicked barons and knights! Other theme days centre around particular subjects, with each term given over to either Numeracy Day, Book Day or Science Day. Book Day usually involves dressing up as their favourite book characters and on Numeracy Day we focus on either shapes, money or time.Â
We have a wonderful woodland area within our grounds and sometimes the children will spend time looking for The Gruffalo. They sear...
