Behind the Scenes: Sutton Valence School
Take pupils on a journey that challenges their skills and helps them surpass their expectations, says David Sansom, Assistant Head of Sutton Valence School, Maidstone
Despite being steeped in more than 440 years of history and tradition, Sutton Valence School is passionate about developing its curriculum to extend the learning of every child. It is something we do very well, being in the top two per cent of schools nationally for the academic value we add to all our students.
However, in today?s changing world we understand that academic attainment alone does not ready a child for their next steps. They need the transferable skills of self-discipline, commitment, focus and effort, which prepare them for success in every element of life.
Surpassing expectations Our four journeys (Academic, Enrichment, Community, and Leadership and Service) create bespoke challenges for each child that grow strengths and address weaknesses. We stretch our students to surpass their expectations, not just in exams, but their whole education.
we encourage pupils to take on responsibilities that support the work of the school
The Leadership and Service journey provides a common starting point for our students; each begins in a similar place, all with the capacity for growth. We encourage all pupils to take on responsibilities that support the work of the school and benefit other people. This links with our emphasis on community and leadership.
