Boarding in lockdown: a breath of fresh air
The experiences of boarders at Stamford School reflect those of many others in similar boarding circumstances during the period of lockdown and school closure in early 2021. It was an exceptional two-month period that saw many boarding communities provide unique support to their students. Loren, Phil and Jack, Year 13 students at Stamford School, reflect on the value of friendship, support and community during their two months in boarding lockdown.
Loren: When I first arrived back in the UK after the Christmas break, I had to isolate for ten days. It was just before term was due to start but within a few days, school closures were announced. Even so, we had a great ten days in a house set aside for quarantining boarders. the house matron and boarding staff went out of their way to make our time as enjoyable as possible. We had a lovely celebration of Armenian orthodox Christmas, since four of the boys who were isolating were from Armenia. After our quarantine period we moved back to the senior boarding house where more friendships were revived. Phil: I came into the boarding house as one of my parents is a key worker with the NHS and I also thought I would be more focused at school. It was a bonus that some of my friends were there too. Personally, I really enjoyed boarding during lockdown. It felt like a privilege because not everyone was able to do it, so I had to make sure I was making the most of my time.
Loren: While I would describe nine weeks as long time, it flew by...
