The bee population around the world is in big trouble; bees are disappearing by the millions. This is a problem for the bees, of course, but also for crops, flowers, and future generations. When we think about bees, our mind often goes to honey and how it sweetens and flavours so many foods on our table. But bees, and particularly honey bees, are also pollinators, and they play an important role in helping many different crops and flowers to grow. When bees are buzzing around apple orchards or blueberry bushes, for example, they are actually working and spreading pollen.
An astonishing 1 in 3 bites of food we eat depend on pollination by bees and other pollinators. About three-quarters of flowering plants depend on it, too. The real buzz is that bees need us, and we need them?and spring is a great time to get involved! Here?s how you and your children can help make the world a more beautiful place and bring back the bees.
Raise children to be Keepers: protectors of bees. Teach your children about what?s happening to the bees. Encourage children to be protectors and Keepers of bees, and to spread the word to their friends at school and in the playground. Get them a ?Keeper?s T-shirt? by redeeming a pincode printed on the inside of select Cheerios boxes.
