Lisa Kerr, Principal of Gordonstoun, where HRH Prince Philip attended school, reveals how its new overseas outpost will continue its adventurous heritage
Gordonstoun, in north-east Scotland was the first school to educate an heir to the British throne, and counts three generations of the British Royal family, including HRH Prince Philip among its alumni.
Located between the Cairngorm National Park and the Moray Firth, the school pioneered the concept of character education. The Gordonstoun motto, Plus Est En Vous ? ?there is more in you? ? is as relevant today as it was when visionary educationalist, Dr Kurt Hahn, founded the school in 1934.

The school?s unique ethos combines academic achievement with exhilarating outdoor experiences and a strong commitment to voluntary service. The Netflix drama series about the British Royal Family, The Crown, inaccurately depicted this as a tough regime of cross-country running and cold showers but the reality is that students spend time on an ocean-going sail training vessel, go camping in the Highlands and volunteer at the UK?s only school-based fire station ? all as part of the curriculum.
