Canford School: Why Community is Key in Independent Schools
Philippa Sudds, Director of Marketing and Communications at Canford School in Dorset discusses how it’s not just beautiful buildings, sprawling campuses and exceptional teaching that make independent schools what they are, it’s also the people
“All who are part of Canford know it is such a unique environment, but it is the people who are its beating heart and soul”, so says Headmaster Ben Vessey in the opening lines of Canford School’s centenary film. When considering the message of this film, it was immediately obvious to everyone involved that it shouldn’t just be about the beautiful buildings and the setting, stunning as it is, or the outstanding exam results, the array of options beyond the classroom for which independent schools are well known, or the full boarding school ethos. It’s the people who live and work within a school who bring it alive, give it its unique atmosphere and contribute to all that is achieved. They are the ones who have shaped its past, its present and its future. Canford has more than 400 teaching and support staff, 660 pupils, 14 governors, 400+ current families and more than 8,000 alumni in regular touch with the school. There are also all those linked to us through our community partnerships at our sponsor academy school, The Bourne Academy. All these contribute to what we call ‘The Canford Community’, and all are important to its ethos and its success.
