Curiosity Club: An Innovative New Teaching Technique
Always on the lookout for new teaching techniques, Deputy Head, Mary Bridges explains her high hopes for her school’s Curiosity Club.
A little more than a year ago, St Michael?s Prep School, Sevenoaks, Kent was introduced to the Curiosity Club ? a conceptual development by world history author, Christopher Lloyd and his colleague, John Gordon-Reid, with whom we have worked, enjoying their sweeping narratives and visual timelines.
The duo have created a concept of connected learning and enabling navigation through knowledge in a similar style to a tube map. It allows pupils to hop from subject to subject using ?wallbooks?, illustrative timelines that provide a broader view of world history and visually connect past and present. The timeline titles cover the entire curriculum, from history to sport, and the series has been developed with institutions such as the National Trust and the Science Museum. We believe that the club provides a unique opportunity for our pupils to choose what they want to study and work at their own pace, as they navigate a 3,000-year timeline containing more than 1,000 images. The pupils will carry out their own research and make important connections between subjects, which is why we have decided to embed the club into our weekly timetable.
