Degree apprenticeships explained
Sue Highmore, Head of Careers at Trinity School, Croydon, explains what’s involved in applying for a degree apprenticeship
As Head of Careers, I have had the privilege of helping increasing numbers of students prepare for apprenticeship applications and I find it hugely rewarding, irrespective of whether they?re ultimately successful. Participating in the challenging selection process alone sees them develop their skill set and maturity, and they go on to tackle other challenges at school in a more confident way.
The best time to start thinking about whether a degree apprenticeship is right for you is in the spring term of Lower Sixth. At Trinity we explain, both to students and parents, how an apprenticeship works, which industries offer them, what qualifications the candidate can gain, the benefits (in addition to getting a salary and avoiding student debt) and the potential drawbacks. Â Pupils should carefully consider whether they feel ready to enter the working world in 18 months? time. This isn?t just about having the necessary exam grades to meet the entry criteria; do they also have the relevant work-ready skills" Â

Employers look for teamwork and good communication skills, but all pupils can find something to say on this.
