There were over 80 pupils in our all-boys? school enthusiastically auditioning for 30 roles in the latest prep school production. I can certainly say that drama is thriving in Bedford School?s stunning new theatre.
Lighting a Spark
I am always excited by the enthusiasm and passion of the boys who step up ?to tread the boards? but I am also delighted at the potential of drama to light a spark in every boy.Â
True not every boy will wish to be in the spotlight, but for those who take centre stage drama offers them an opportunity to explore their creativity, imagination and dramatic skills, while having fun with their friends. Drama also develops their confidence and self-esteem, and helps them to articulate their ideas: all skills that are valuable long after the curtain falls. Indeed, these skills provide the perfect building blocks for debating with confidence, public speaking and delivering presentations ? regular occurrences throughout their school years as well as future working lives. As members of the cast and crew, boys also learn the art of compromise, effective teamwork, time management, problem-solving, being trained and training others, and the importance of dedication ? these are skills every teacher, coach and employer greatly values.Â
