Emanuel School: How this London school won Independent School of the Year for Community Outreach 2021
Emmanuel School, a secondary school located in Wandsworth, south-west London, were the joint winners of Independent School of the Year for Community Outreach at our Independent School of the Year Awards 2021. Here?s how they bagged the title out of over 700 entrants.
Emanuel School is an independent secondary school with 1,000 pupils in Wandsworth, south-west London. As our borough has high levels of deprivation, an integral aim of our school is to build and nurture mutually beneficial relationships with schools and community organisations in our local area. Our goal is to ensure our pupils have a sense of responsibility, purpose and an understanding that they can make a significant difference to the world around them.
Our work in the community permeates every aspect of school life. All pupils from Year 6 to 13 are involved in community activities and such programmes are an integral part of the curriculum. Pupils and staff are actively encouraged to volunteer – staff serve as school governors, run drama, art, STEM and creative writing workshops and facilitate GCSE booster courses. Over 180 pupils participate in the Duke of Edinburgh programme each year, volunteering thousands of hours between them.
