Food at school: How London restaurant chefs and schools are changing the menu
What our children eat and food at school is vital to their physical and mental wellbeing. We discover how London restaurant chefs and schools are changing the menuÂ
Six years ago, Nicole Pisani was working for the celebrated chef and food writer Yotam Ottolenghi. She loved the job but yearned for a Monday to Friday routine which the busy London restaurant scene did not accommodate. She then answered a tweet that was going to change her life and career. It came from Henry Dimbleby, the co-founder of Leon and writer of the government?s School Food Plan that looks at food at school. This exchange led to Pisani applying for a job as a chef at Gayhurst School in Hackney where Dimbleby?s children were pupils.
?We?re now in 35 different schools,? says Pisani, the co-founder of Chefs in Schools. ?We?re in state schools and areas of high deprivation: Streatham, Totteridge, Tottenham, Hackney, Wood Green, a cluster towards Clerkenwell, three in Hounslow.? Ottolenghi is a patron, as is Prue Leith, the Great British Bake Off judge and former Chair of the School Food Trust. As Covid-19 decimates the restaurant scene, chefs are volunteering and applying for permanent positions in schools. ?These chefs are working hard to get a good plate of food to a child. They are rolling up their sleeves,? says Pisani. Nearly 30 chefs are in schools. Some have worked in restaurants such as Petersham Nurseries and St John?s and there are plans to expand outside the capital.
