Full steam ahead for Mayfield School
John Doy, Head of Sixth Form and English teacher at the all-girls Mayfield School talks about his own background in education and what it’s like to witness the development of pupils at the high-achieving Mayfield School in Sussex, which supports and encourages girls to reach their full potential.
I have experienced quite a variety of educational settings in my career in education: I went to a boys? grammar school; started my teaching career in a state-funded comprehensive; enjoyed a stint overseas in an international school; and returned to the UK to teach in a mixed independent school. In some ways, then, coming to work in a girls? school like Mayfield was the next logical step and it is certainly fascinating engaging with the debate around single-sex, and specifically all-female, education. One of the main arguments for an all-girls? education is the freedom from the stereotyping that seems to creep in to any mixed environment. At A Level the statistics are quite startling. For example, a girl at a GSA school (Girls School Association, of which Mayfield is a member) is 75% more likely to take Maths at A Level, 70 % more likely to take Chemistry, and two and a half times more likely to take Physics, all subjects traditionally considered as ?hard?, male-oriented subjects.
