Highgate School: Social Mobility
Headmaster Adam Pettitt talks about the London school’s Chrysalis Partnership Programme and how it changed the lives of local students
Highgate School in north London works hard to make a difference to the lives of thousands of children across the city and, for the last decade, has channelled this work through our Chrysalis Partnership Programme. Chrysalis is an innovative educational model, enabling pupils in state schools across London to access Highgate?s exceptional teaching and learning. In 2017, as an extension of Chrysalis, Highgate became lead educational sponsor of London Academy of Excellence (LAET) which provides a rigorous academic post-16 education in a borough where 52 per cent of young people leave for post-16 education. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is lead business sponsor. Highgate?s academic sponsorship of LAET is vitally important, since LAET is situated in Northumberland Park, a ward in the top two per cent of highest deprivation in the country. Analysis of LAET pupils? postcodes shows 60 per cent come from the lowest of 15 categories (?struggling estates? and ?difficult circumstances?) according to demographic segmentation tool, Acorn.
Situated in the far east of the borough of Haringey, just one per cent of Tottenham?s young people go to Russell Group universities, compared with 18 per cent in west Haringey. (The borough is divided along socio-economic lines with fewer qualifications, job opportunities and life expectancies in the east).
