How Filmmaking Inspires Creative Writing in the Classroom
An increasing number of schools are using filmmaking as a way of inspiring creative writing in the classroom. Laura Venn of Tubbenden Primary School tells us more
Every teacher knows that the most effective learning happens when children are enjoying themselves and are passionate about their learning. Combine this enjoyment with creativity and innovation, and you surely have a recipe for success.
So, when Year Six pupils at Tubbenden Primary School, Orpington were tasked with completing Plastic Times, a three-week digital literacy project, enthusiasm levels were sky-high from the start. The project, which is supported by CNN and Surfdome, aims to educate seven to 11-year-olds on the issue of plastic pollution, while empowering them to make a difference to the future of our planet. Plastic Times was also later featured in the upcoming LitFilmFest ? a KS2 film festival that inspires writing through filmmaking ? where the children had the chance to see themselves on the biggest cinema screen in Britain.
The aim of the game
The purpose of the project was to write, produce and film a news report that highlighted the damage caused to oceans and wildlife by plastic pollution. As an issue that?s regularly featured in the news, we were impressed by pupils? knowledge and awareness of the problem, particularly as they are considered to be a part of the ?disposable generation?.
