HRH The Princess Royal Opens Gordonstoun’s New Carbon Education Hub
HRH The Princess Royal visited Gordonstoun on February 1st to officially open one of the ?greenest? classroom buildings in the UK
With approval from The King, a former Gordonstoun student, the Princess Royal unveiled a plaque naming the new eco-friendly classroom hub ‘The Queen Elizabeth II Rooms’ in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
During her visit to Gordonstoun, HRH The Princess Royal met students and took a tour of the new classrooms, including a demonstration of how students at Gordonstoun are using artificial intelligence in the classroom and a presentation from the school’s robotics club who will compete at the National Championships in June this year.

Ayrshire’s famous Dumfries House inspired much of the building’s design, and Gordonstoun representatives visited it during the planning phase. In addition to solar PV panels, ground source heating and hi-tech C02 monitoring, the Queen Elizabeth II Rooms are clad with Siberian Larch timber which is an eco-friendly alternative to slower-growing hardwoods that are often used in building projects. The solar panels generate enough free energy for four months of the year, while the overall bill for the building has been substantially cut.
The building has been equipped with the latest technology, including control systems for removing and adding walls to alter the size of existing rooms, and interactive teaching walls.
