Ikea recalls MALM dressers after three child deaths
Photo: IKEA Canada
IKEA is recalling 29 million MALM chests and dressers because they can fall and fatally injure children if they are not properly secured to walls. The announcement comes following the death of three children in the last two years as a result of these dressers not being properly anchored. IKEA Canada has now announced that they will be discontinuing sales of the MALM dresser line because it does not meet the voluntary North American ASTM standard requirements on free-standing stability.
What should you do"
IKEA Canada is offering a repair or full refunds for the furniture if it was manufactured between January 2002 and June 2016. If you cannot for any reason secure your IKEA chests of drawers to the wall, you can return your product to any IKEA location for a full refund. Chests of drawers manufactured prior to 2002 will be eligible for a partial store credit. If you still want to keep your IKEA chests of drawers, but you didn’t keep your tip-over restraint, you can pick up a free wall anchoring kit at any IKEA location or one can be delivered to your home by contacting the Customer Support Centre at 1-800-661-9807 or by visiting ikea.ca/saferhomestogether.
