Impatient parents spend £841m on teaching their child to ride a bike
Swimming lessons or learning to play an instrument, maybe. But are we really so time-poor that we have to get someone else to teach our children to ride a bike"Â
It would seem so. In fact, it’s been reported that even activities such as art (32%) and reading (19%) are being outsourced to professionals these days.
The research, conducted by MyVoucherCodes, found that 3 in 10 parents were swerving the responsibility of teaching their child to ride a bike, stating fear and frustration as the causes. While it is often seen by many as a chance to enjoy some quality time with the kids, 33% of parents who send their child out to lessons admitted they just don’t have the patience, while 20% were unaware how to instruct their child effectively. 39% said they were worried their child would hurt themselves. The average £841m spend on cycling lessons in Britain equates to more than £143 per family. Some parents even admitted they were willing to spend more than £500 on lessons. On average, the majority of children take just two weeks to learn.
“Considering 91% of parents described their own experience of learning to ride a bike as positive, it’s surprising to see the number, let alone expense, of parents outsourcing such a key childhood milestone,” says Chris Reilly, managing director of MyVoucherCodes, which has teamed up with a Halfords cycling coach to offer hints and tips to parents whose children are currently learning. “Perhaps mums...
