Importance of sport at Norwich School
Joe Cowan, Director of Sport at Norwich School, talks about the importance that the school places on making sport an integral part of life for pupils there.
Sport at Norwich School is driven by 3 main aims:
A breadth of activities so all pupils gain the physical competence, confidence, motivation, knowledge and understanding to maintain a lifetime of physical activity.
With adult obesity rates above 25% in men and women and at 5% in boys and girls, Norwich School believes it is essential to promote a healthy and active lifestyle to all pupils; reducing the impact of an increasingly sedentary nation.
Senior School pupils partake in a minimum of two sports sessions each week, and three sessions per week are provided for the Lower School pupils. In addition, there are many extra-curricular clubs to get involved in as well as competitive fixtures each week for a range of ages and abilities. Recent studies have proved that sport helps to improve brain functioning, increase energy levels and improve quality of sleep as well as a reducing in stress levels; all very important for our pupils taking academic exams.
