Independent Schools of the Year 2021 Finalist: Pangbourne College
The array of sport, ceremonial traditions and sense of community at Pangbourne College impressed the judges, and this is what secured the school a finalist?s place in the co-educational school category.
Established as ‘The Nautical College’ in 1917 to prepare young men for the merchant navy, Pangbourne College emerged in the 1960s and became fully co-educational in 1992. Today, 36% of the cohort are female and we
aim to increase this to 40% by 2023.
This goal is important to us as we wholeheartedly believe in the value of a co-educational environment which benefits boys and girls equally and prepares them for life beyond school.
Sports at Pangbourne College
Sport is a key feature of the ‘Pangbourne College Experience’ Sport is key to developing positive attitudes towards learning, teamwork and wellbeing and is, therefore, a key feature of the Pangbourne experience. All pupils take part in four games sessions per week, including at least one
competitive fixture. Most of our sports provision is team-based which helps develop a wide range of life skills.
We offer traditional school sports such as rugby, hockey, netball, cricket and rowing, alongside less traditional sports such as horse riding, shooting and non-contact Rugby.
Our philosophy is a simple one: ‘participation, enjoyment, and excellence’ and we believe that this positive attitude successfully prepares pupils of both sexes for life after school.
