Independent Schools Secure Better GCSE Results
Independent schools boast a third of all school GCSE results graded A* – an increase of 1.6% on the previous year
Despite the fact that the top results across the nation fell by 0.1%, independent schools championed top grades that were five times higher than the national average at 130,395 (34.5% of all results).
Barnaby Lennon, Chairman of Independent Schools Council (ISC), said: ?To see an increase in independent school grades across the board is excellent news and testament to all those working hard in our schools ? and of course to the young men and women who sat their exams having built towards them for a number of years.
?Set against a decrease in numbers nationally and in an environment where there are efforts to halt grade inflation, this is particularly impressive.? Mr Lennon, former headmaster of Harrow School, collected the data from 39,310 candidates in 552 independent schools across the UK.
Not only does the report reveal soaring A and A* grades, but it also showcases an increase for candidates achieving five or more A*-C grades (which must include English and Maths), which climbed 0.7% to 90.8%
Candidates achieving five or more A*-C grades (which must include English, Maths and at least one science and one modern foreign language) is 76.1%.
