For children who don?t speak English at home, settling into a London school can present a bit more of a challenge. Fortunately, many of the capital?s prep schools offer a warm and welcoming environment where they can make friends and develop their new language skills at a pace that suits them.

Hill House, in Chelsea, takes pride in being an international school with children from many countries who speak a huge array of different languages, says Joanna Hasler, head of English and librarian at Hill House. ?We teach a varied and vibrant curriculum aimed at developing the language skills of both native English speakers and children with English as an additional language,? she says. Pupils take great interest in the languages that their friends speak. ?Recently, the children requested that we set up a new section in our school library comprising books from many different languages,? says Joanna.
?We assumed that the books in each language would be read solely by the children who speak that language, but it has been lovely to see the children?s curiosity in exploring books in languages that they had never come across before. I have, on several occasions, seen a child sharing a book in their home language with their best friend and trying to teach them a few key words of that languag...
