Made in Mayfair: London’s New Senior School
Phillip Williams explains his high hopes for a new school moulded to early 21st-century educational requirements
I decided to take on the role of headmaster at the Eaton Square Upper School with great pride. It represents a great opportunity to design an education tailored to early 21st-century needs.
There are few independent co-educational senior schools in central London at the moment, and none in Mayfair. I set out to ensure that the school meets the needs of families in the local area.
My portfolio
I studied maths and philosophy at the University of Oxford, before taking on my first position in at Winchester College, Hampshire. Â In this role, I predominantly taught maths, and then in 1997, I joined the college?s senior management team, where I was responsible for the school?s curriculum and organisation ? a great training ground for my current post. I joined Francis Holland School, Sloane Square, in London, in 2003, initially as the director of studies and then as the senior deputy head. Married for 10 years, my wife, Orpha Phelan is an international opera director, who works mostly in Europe, but travels as far as Sydney, Australia. We have two young children, Abel who is six, and Clevan, aged four.
One of the most exciting things about Eaton Square Upper is that it?s starting from scratch ? yet has the benefit of a very well-established network of schools
