Meet the Head: Bedford School
We speak to James Hodgson, Headmaster of Bedford School, to find out more about the school’s history and how they prepare children for the next stage in their school career.
How long have you been at the school"
I have been at Bedford School since 2014, having spent the previous three years as Usher at Magdalen College School in Oxford.
Can you tell us a little bit about the history of the school"
The school was founded in the reign of Edward VI and owes its existence to the generosity of Sir William and Dame Alice Harpur. Their charitable endowment became The Harpur Trust, and their vision continues through our scholarships and bursaries.
In the centuries that followed, the school went through continual change and development. We introduced boarders in 1811 and moved to our current campus, from a town centre position, in 1891. Through the 20th century, we grew steadily, adding buildings and facilities, despite setbacks including the devastating fire of 1979 when the main school building burned down. Despite losing almost all its classrooms, the school reopened for business as usual on the Monday morning. Ever since, we have prided ourselves on a ?get up and get on with it? spirit. Needless to say, the lockdown periods have not been seen as an excuse to miss any lessons ? and, due to a robust ?learning at home programme?, we haven?t!
