Meet the Head: Prior?s Field, Surrey GSA Girls’ Boarding and Day School
Tracy Kirnig (pronounced Keer-nig) MA, PGCE became the eleventh Head of Prior?s Field in September 2015 and shares her thoughts on her first year.
?I was given a tip-off that ?nothing was ever ordinary at Prior?s Field? and am delighted to report that this is completely true!
As a relatively small school of 440 pupils, our commitment is to providing space for individuality, initiative and enterprise to blossom. Exam results are very important, but I believe that many schools are too exam-focused. At Prior?s Field this year I have seen that balance is possible. Pupils achieve excellent results and go on to universities of their choice, including Oxbridge, but they play hard too, finding time to achieve so much beyond the classroom.
I have also learnt of the school?s extraordinary educational, literary and scientific heritage, stemming from our founder Julia Huxley (née Arnold) and her family connections. The granddaughter of Dr Thomas Arnold, the reforming headmaster of Rugby School, and niece of the poet Matthew Arnold, Julia was one of the first women to attend Somerville College, Oxford. She married Leonard Huxley, son of another great thinker of the Victorian age; Thomas Henry Huxley, of humble origins and largely self-taught, became a professor of biology and president of the Royal Society.
