Meet the Head: Wells Cathedral School
We speak to Alastair Tighe, the Headmaster of Wells Cathedral School, to find out more about the school’s history and how they prepare children for the next stage in their school career.
How long have you been at the school"
I am in my third year as Headmaster having arrived in September 2018. Before that I was Deputy Head (Academic) at Bedford School, Director of Music at Eltham College and Assistant Director of Music and Assistant Housemaster at Oundle School.
Can you tell us a little about the history of the school"
Wells is one of the UK?s oldest schools; we have just celebrated our 1,111th birthday, having been founded in AD909 in England?s smallest, and arguably, most beautiful city. The school was established to educate the Choristers of Wells Cathedral, and we are so proud that we still live by that founding purpose, with all the boy and girl Choristers of the Cathedral educated at the school today. But the school has evolved significantly over the centuries and is now a thriving co-educational boarding and day school for about 720 pupils, aged 2-18, all on one site. We are also one of four Music Specialist Schools in England, but the only Music Specialist school set within the context of an all-round education.
