Meet the Head: Whitgift School
We speak to Chris Ramsey, Headmaster of Whitgift School, to find out more about the school’s history and how they prepare children for the next stage in their school career.
How long have you been at the school"
This is my fourth year at Whitgift. Before arriving at the school I was Head at The King?s School, Chester, where I had been for ten years.
Can you tell us a little bit about the history of the school"
John Whitgift founded the school along with Almshouses exactly 425 years ago. Croydon was one of the residences of Archbishops of Canterbury (and remained so into the 20th century, by the way) and he left land for the education of ?poor boys? as well as the care of the elderly. This makes Whitgift and the John Whitgift Foundation unique, and one of the biggest bursary-providers in the UK. Whitgift had also been, in an earlier life, Chamberlain (and therefore official censor of Shakespeare?s plays), and one story is that Shakespeare himself referred to the ?White Gift?. For a long time boys would wear a white flower on Founder?s Day. We are determined to build on Whitgift?s legacy and increase it through philanthropy, and I?m determined that our boys learn to give back in all kinds of ways.
What do you believe your school does particularly well"
We?re a very diverse community, both ethnically and socially, so I do believe we ?do? inclusion well. We are proud of the range of opportunities, especially clubs and societies, and we are also very prou...
